Years after the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, severe drought devastated portions of New Mexico -- an area that had been known as "The Pinto Bean Capitol of the World." Many farmers just "up and left," as others had done during the Depression Era, leaving a place such as Oklahoma for California.
Those who abandoned their homes often sold their land to ranchers to use for cattle ranching.

Do not feed the bears; if you see one, do not run. Do as you would do if you encounter a rattlesnake: back up slowly, to show you are not "invading the creature's space."
